Traditional Ceremonies

Living culture, generously shared

Zambia is home to more than seventy peoples, and its traditional ceremonies are among the most spectacular on the continent. The Kuomboka, when the Litunga of the Lozi is paddled from the floodplains to higher ground aboard the great black-and-white barge Nalikwanda, is pure theatre: drums, paddlers, and thousands lining the water.

The Nc'wala of the Ngoni celebrates the first fruits with warrior dances and the tasting of the harvest; the Likumbi Lya Mize of the Luvale brings the masked makishi dancers to life. These are not performances staged for visitors. They are living traditions, and being welcomed into them is a privilege.

Because the ceremonies follow the seasons and the rivers, timing a trip around one takes planning. As a Zambian-led company, we know the calendars, the families and the protocols. We travel respectfully, by invitation.
